MUSIC – EXTRA CURRICULAR

We believe that every pupil should have the opportunity to develop their musical potential and we celebrate, promote and encourage it in our curriculum and extra-curricular activities.

Our Music Curriculum

Every child has a weekly class music lesson where we aim to offer an inclusive, diverse and engaging curriculum, in line with National Curriculum objectives. We encourage links with other curriculum areas and want each child to aspire to sing, play, compose, and improvise with confidence to the best of their ability. We want children to be actively engaged in making music in all their lessons so they compose and perform using percussion instruments, djembe drums, recorders and ukuleles as well as other instruments they may be learning. They regularly use Garageband to compose. Singing forms a key role in the teaching and learning and we hope to develop personal confidence giving pupils the opportunity to sing in class, assembly, choirs, concerts and shows. Children listen to music from a variety of historical periods, styles, traditions and genres, inspiring them to look outwards and develop their own musical tastes.  Much of their music making is shared with their parents in assemblies or on Seesaw.

Music In The Community

Our choirs take part in a number of concerts and shows throughout the year, including a carol concert at St Albans Abbey, a concert at the Alban Arena with other local schools and the Young Voices show at the 02.  They also sing carols at a local care home and at our Christmas Fair.

Music Enrichment

We give all children the opportunity to learn the recorder in Year 3 and the ukulele in Year 4 as part of their music curriculum.  Those learning other instruments, or who are especially interested in singing, are offered workshops at the St Albans Music School throughout the school year.  Pupils enjoy live music from peripatetic teachers and visiting musicians and are given opportunities to perform in assemblies throughout the year.

The Orchestra

The school orchestra perform each term to parents and the school, playing an eclectic mix of classical, pop and musical. Some instrumentalists also take part in the St Albans’ Primary Schools Music Association concert at the Alban Arena each year.
